Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS, FODMAPS help

Irritable Bowel Syndrome ("IBS") is a very common disorder where the normal function on the bowel is disturbed, causing symptoms like diarrhoae, constipation, abdominal pain and bloating.

IBS can occur at any age and is more common in women

Whilst the causes of IBS are not well understood, there are several common reasons that a person might find themselves with the symptoms of IBS including:-

  • A recent infection in the digestive system.

  • Your digestive system becoming more sensitive leading to muscle spasms in the bowel.

  • Some mediucations and foods.

  • An increase in stress (which will usually exacerbate symptoms that are already there).

Fixing the unpleasant symptoms of IBS is where a dietitian may be able to help. An elimination diet or the correct use of a FODMAPS diet which eliminates fermentable sugars, are used once the symptoms are ascertained.

Speak to your GP who will check that your symptoms are not relating to other medical conditions, then a visit to a dietitian can help with commencing an elimination protocol.
